Overview

Côte d’Ivoire’s agricultural sector plays a central role in the national economy, serving as a major source of employment, income, and export earnings. Agriculture employs nearly 60 percent of the country’s active workforce, underscoring the importance of reliable agricultural statistics for policy design, investment planning, and monitoring sector performance.

Côte d’Ivoire is strengthening its agricultural statistics system through a multi-year agricultural survey programme under the 50x2030 Initiative, supported through the West and Central Africa Statistics Harmonization and Improvement Project (PHASAOC). Led by the Ministère d’État, Ministère de l’Agriculture, du Développement Rural et des Productions Vivrières (MEMINADERPV), in collaboration with the Agence Nationale de la Statistique (ANStat), the programme is improving the availability, quality, and accessibility of agricultural data to support evidence-based decision-making.

With technical assistance from the 50x2030 Initiative, Côte d’Ivoire is implementing a series of Annual Agricultural Survey (ESA), generating essential information on agricultural households, crop and livestock production, land tenure systems, agricultural practices, and rural livelihoods. The surveys are a key source of information for monitoring the performance of the agricultural sector and informing national agricultural development strategies.

The publication of the results of the 2024/2025 Annual Agricultural Survey marks an important milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen its agricultural data ecosystem. Findings highlight the predominance of smallholder farming, with an average farm size of 3.4 hectares, as well as important challenges related to land access and limited irrigation coverage. Anonymized microdata from the survey are also publicly available through the ANStat microdata catalogue, supporting research and policy analysis.

Beyond data production, the 50x2030 Initiative supports capacity development, analytical work, and the wider use of agricultural statistics through training, open-data dissemination, and engagement with policymakers and other stakeholders.
