Mali
Overview
Mali's agricultural sector is the backbone of the national economy, employing the majority of the active population and contributing significantly to GDP and food security. Reliable and timely agricultural statistics are essential to guide policy, monitor sector performance, and attract investment in rural development.
Mali is strengthening its agricultural statistics system through a multi-year agricultural survey programme under the 50x2030 Initiative, supported through the West and Central Africa Statistics Harmonization and Improvement Project (PHASAOC). Led by the Cellule de Planification et de Statistique du Secteur Développement Rural (CPS/SDR) in collaboration with the Institut National de la Statistique (INSTAT), the programme is improving the availability, quality, and accessibility of agricultural data to support evidence-based decision-making.
With technical assistance from the 50x2030 Initiative, Mali is implementing a series of Annual Agricultural Surveys (EAC – Enquête Agricole de Conjoncture), generating essential information on agricultural households, crop production, land use, agricultural practices, and rural livelihoods. The surveys are a key source of information for monitoring the performance of the agricultural sector and informing national agricultural development strategies.
The publication of the results of the 2023/2024 Annual Agricultural Survey (EAC) marks an important milestone in Mali's efforts to strengthen its agricultural data ecosystem. Key findings reveal that cultivated land spanned 7.45 million hectares, with cereal production reaching 8.84 million tonnes. Anonymized microdata from this survey are publicly available through the INSTAT microdata catalogue, and an interactive dashboard of statistical tables is accessible via the Open Data for Africa portal, supporting research and policy analysis. The 2025/2026 Enquête Agricole de Conjoncture (EAC), which includes a dedicated module on agricultural equipment (MEA), is currently in its final stages of processing and is expected to be publicly available, together with its anonymized microdata, by December 2026.
Beyond data production, the 50x2030 Initiative supports capacity development, analytical work, and the wider use of agricultural statistics through training, open-data dissemination, and engagement with policymakers and other stakeholders.
