Overview

Malawi has made important progress in strengthening its agricultural statistics system, working closely with the National Statistical Office (NSO), the Government of Malawi, the World Bank, and other partners to improve the availability and use of high-quality agricultural data and support evidence-based policymaking.

Under 50x2030, Malawi implemented the National Census of Agriculture (NACA) 2024/25, contributing to the production of key agricultural statistics and indicators required for national planning and monitoring frameworks. The census represents an important milestone in strengthening the country’s agricultural data ecosystem and establishing stronger links between agricultural census operations and regular agricultural surveys.

The 50x2030 Initiative provided technical assistance throughout the design, implementation, and dissemination phases of agricultural data collection activities, including support from the Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS) team and other technical experts. Results from Malawi’s Agricultural Census and Agricultural Survey have been released, providing detailed information on agricultural production systems, land use, livestock, input adoption, and market participation.

Building on these achievements, efforts are underway to further strengthen Malawi’s capacity to generate and use agricultural statistics through continued technical assistance, capacity building, and support for evidence-based decision-making in the agriculture sector.
