Benin
Overview
Through the 50x2030 Initiative, Benin is strengthening its agricultural statistics system through the implementation of a multi-year agricultural survey programme through the West and Central Africa Statistics Harmonization and Improvement Project (PHASAOC) and with technical assistance from the 50x2030 Initiative. The programme aims to improve the availability, quality, timeliness, and use of agricultural data to support evidence-based policymaking and agricultural transformation.
Led by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MAEP) in collaboration with the National Institute of Statistics and Demography (INStaD), the programme supports the regular production of high-quality agricultural data. Through annual agricultural surveys, the programme generates information on farmers, agricultural production, livelihoods, food security, and sustainable agricultural practices, helping policymakers and development partners make informed decisions.
The publication of the first ESA 2024 results marked an important milestone in Benin’s participation in the 50x2030 Initiative. The survey provides official statistics on agricultural production, food security, land use, climate adaptation, and rural livelihoods, while supporting the production of key indicators for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 2 and SDG 5.
A key achievement has been the public dissemination of agricultural indicators through the Benin Data Portal, improving transparency and expanding access to official agricultural statistics. As additional survey rounds and thematic modules are implemented, Benin will continue strengthening its agricultural statistical system and enhancing the evidence available to guide agricultural transformation and sustainable development.
