One Year of Feed Salone: Progess Made Toward Food Security Objectives in Sierra Leone with 50x2030 Support

As part of the 50x2030 Initiative’s partnership with Sierra Leone, our work has contributed to both increasing the quality and availability of agricultural data as well as facilitating the use of data for future policy development. In addition, the 50x2030 Initiative has developed products to support national priorities, including contributing to the main guiding agricultural strategy of the country: Feed Salone.

Sierra Leone’s national Feed Salone strategy was introduced in 2023 and is focused on increasing food security and economic growth while building climate-resilient food systems across the country. According to the strategy, these objectives will be achieved through five key activities implemented from its launch in 2023 through 2028:

  1. Reducing import dependency
  2. Boosting export earnings
  3. Job creation
  4. Alleviating hunger and malnutrition
  5. Fostering climate resilience

As an example of the impact of the 50x2030 Initiative, the Sierra Leone Data Ecosystem Mapping (DEM) is cited as a critical tool to assess the agricultural data landscape in Sierra Leone. Published in May 2024, the DEM analyzes the current and desired state of agricultural and rural data use, identifying constraints to effective data application. Additionally, it maps key stakeholders and their communication networks using a mapping tool to better understand relationships and data-related practices. This effort is part of the broader roadmap to improve data-driven agricultural development by 2030.
