Niger
Overview
Niger's agricultural sector is central to the livelihoods of a large share of the population and plays a critical role in food security across the Sahel region. Strengthening agricultural data systems is vital for evidence-based policy and timely response to climate and food security challenges.
Niger is strengthening its agricultural statistics system through a multi-year agricultural survey programme under the 50x2030 Initiative, supported through the West and Central Africa Statistics Harmonization and Improvement Project (PHASAOC). Led by the Directorate of Statistics of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (DS/MAG/EL) in collaboration with the Institut National de Statistique (INS), the programme aims to improve the availability, quality, timeliness, and use of agricultural data to support evidence-based policymaking and agricultural resilience.
With technical assistance from the 50x2030 Initiative, Niger has implemented a nationally representative post-harvest losses survey (Enquête Pertes Agricoles Post-Récoltes – EPPR 2024), covering 720 agricultural households and 120 wholesale traders across 39 departments, and is carrying out its annual crop forecasting and estimation surveys (Enquête Prévision et Estimation des Récoltes – EPER), generating key information on agricultural production, crop losses, food availability, and rural livelihoods.
The 2024 Post-Harvest Losses Survey marks an important first data release under the 50x2030 Initiative in Niger. Its findings show that agricultural loss rates ranged between 10% and 20% depending on the crop, with significant losses occurring during threshing, cleaning, transport, and drying stages. A survey brief summarising the results was published in September 2025, and public use microdata are accessible through the INS Central Data Catalogue. The EPER 2025, launched on 18 July 2025 using a CAPI-based methodology, is currently in its final stages of processing, with results expected by end of December 2026.
Beyond data production, the 50x2030 Initiative supports capacity development, analytical work, and the wider use of agricultural statistics
