Cambodia becomes first country set to develop its 50x2030 implementation plan

The 50x2030 Initiative held a virtual meeting with Cambodia on 10 July to discuss next steps for formally articulating its multi-year work plan, the first under the Initiative. This preparatory process will involve working with the 50x2030 Program Management Team between July and December 2020 to draft the country commitment document and program implementation plan before Cambodia conducts the integrated 50x2030 agriculture survey in early 2021.

The 50x2030 Initiative held a virtual meeting with Cambodia on 10 July to discuss next steps for formally articulating its multi-year work plan, the first under the Initiative.This preparatory process will involve working with the 50x2030 Program Management Team between July and December 2020 to draft the country commitment document and program implementation plan before Cambodia conducts the integrated 50x2030 agriculture survey in early 2021. 

The Cambodia National Institute of Statistics and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries will lead in implementing the data production, data use and research activities under the Initiative. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Bank will provide technical support for each of the program components. FAO is already preparing to conduct the agriculture survey program with the country, and IFAD has begun an assessment of data needs to promote data use in Cambodia.

As a participating country in 50x2030, Cambodia will benefit from the Initiative’s flexible integrated survey program that builds on best data collection practices of World Bank and FAO; research in alternative data sources; an open data agenda and capacity development for data users in-country; technical oversight from the Initiative’s Technical Advisory Group; the production of SDG 2-related indicators; and improved gender-disaggregated data at country level.

The virtual meeting was chaired by the 50x2030 Program Manager El Iza Mohamedou. In attendance were H.E. Hang Lina, Director General of Cambodia’s National Institute of Statistics; Mak Mony, Director of Department of Planning and Statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries; and managers of the program’s three technical components from FAO, World Bank and IFAD.

50x2030 will reach 50 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America over the course of the next decade. Cambodia was one of 15 countries “pre-approved” for inclusion at the Initiative's outset because they were engaged in either the FAO AGRISurvey or in the World Bank LSMS-ISA program before 50x2030 began. The other 14 pre-approved countries are Armenia, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Georgia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania and Uganda. 

The Initiative’s remaining 35 countries will be selected on a rolling basis in the coming months and years. 

The next countries to begin working on their country commitment document and program implementation plans include Ethiopia, Georgia, Nigeria, Senegal and Uganda.
