Cambodia Graduates from the 50x2030 Initiative
The launch of the 2024 Cambodia Agricultural Survey (CAS) highlights Cambodia’s achievement in creating a sustainable, modern agricultural data system and completing its engagement with the 50x2030 Initiative to Close the Agricultural Data Gap.
One of 50x2030’s earliest partners, Cambodia has completed six consecutive annual surveys, transforming a limited data landscape into a fully institutionalized government-led system. Cambodia’s National Institute of Statistics (NIS) confirmed that CAS 2025 has already been completed and fully financed by the Royal Government, marking the success of the first fully government-managed round and demonstrating the long-term sustainability of Cambodia’s agricultural statistics program. “The release of CAS 2024 is a testament to the Royal Government of Cambodia’s ambition to modernize our agricultural sector in line with the Pentagonal Strategy and Cambodia Vision 2030,” said His Excellency Try Ritthea, Director General of NIS.
Over six years, Cambodia has advanced rapidly in its agricultural data systems. CAS became the first nationwide survey to adopt Computer-Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) technology via the World Bank’s Survey Solutions platform, and the digital infrastructure has been expanded to other national surveys, including the 2025 Cambodia Socio-Economic Survey. More than 2,400 staff from NIS and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) gained expertise across the survey cycle—from field operations to data cleaning, estimation, tabulation and dissemination—ensuring technical and managerial capacity is fully institutionalized. CAS remains the only survey in Cambodia regularly publishing anonymized microdata online.
CAS data supports national planning and policy development, informing the National Agricultural Development Policy 2022–2030, supporting the Pentagonal Strategy and contributing to key SDG indicators. The 2024 survey covered 15,622 households and 520 juridical holdings, providing insights into crop and livestock production, fishing, aquaculture and land use across over 1.8 million agricultural households.
With CAS 2024, the 50x2030 Initiative concludes its engagement in Cambodia. Strong government leadership, effective collaboration between NIS and MAFF and sustained investment in people and systems have prepared Cambodia to be successful in the production of future surveys and in leveraging data for agricultural policy development.
