With Completion of Togo Program Implementation Plan, 50x2030 Expands Regional Partnership in West Africa

In May 2023, the 50x2030 Initiative finalized a Program Implementation Plan (PIP) in partnership with the Government of Togo. With completion of the PIP for Togo, efforts will now begin to launch agricultural survey data collection, technical assistance, and trainings to promote data use within key stakeholder groups in support of country-specific policy objectives. Initial survey results will be expected in early 2024, with additional activities planned through 2025.

The 50x2030 Initiative’s partnership with the Government of Togo represents a continuation of investment in statistical systems strengthening in West Africa. The World Bank has concluded that one of the major factors limiting the quality of agricultural statistics in West Africa is inconsistent financing. To address this reality, the World Bank has allocated $379 million of International Development Association (IDA) credits and grants focused on advancing statistical systems in this region specifically under two programs: Harmonizing and Improving Statistics in West Africa (HISWA) and West and Central Africa (HISWACA).

The 50x2030 Initiative is a stakeholder in HISWA and HISWACA. Through these projects, 50x2030 will be engaging with country governments to support efforts to advance national statistical systems and generate foundational agriculture statistics to inform agriculture sector development and reform. To date, the Initiative has finalized PIPs and begun technical assistance in HISWA beneficiary countries: Burkina Faso, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Liberia, Togo and Cape Verde. 50x2030 has also initiated technical discussions with HISWACA beneficiary countries: Guinea, Gambia, Mali, Niger, Guinea Bissau and Benin. A total of nearly $70 million in IDA funds have been mobilized thus far by the 50x2030 Program Management Team to finance data production with HISWA and HISWACA.
