Inaugural 50x2030 Global Data Use Conference looks to boost awareness and demand for use of survey data

50x2030 will host its first annual Global Data Use Conference virtually from 30 November – 2 December. The online gathering, which has as its theme “Intensifying Data Use,” has a three-fold objective: to increase awareness of the power of survey data to address development challenges; to allow participants to establish networks with experts from around the world that face similar challenges in achieving food security and sustainable agricultural growth; and to facilitate knowledge creation and exchange, as well as capacity building.

The conference will have sessions showcasing examples of the application of 50x2030 survey data in 50x2030 partner countries with a particular focus on the results of the 50x2030 research grant competition, which issued small grants – from US$1,000-$10,000 –for projects that employ 50x2030 survey data to generate practical research that can be applied to national policymaking, program (re)design or investment decisions.

Other conference sessions will explore constraints on data use in countries and strategies to overcome them as well as deep dives into how data use is being approached in the context of the 50x2030 Initiative, which aims to support 50 countries to increase their capacity to produce, analyze, interpret and use high-quality, timely agricultural survey data for evidence-informed decision- and policymaking.  There will also be dedicated sessions for networking and training, and exhibition booths for partner presentations and informal interaction.

The conference will unfold for roughly four hours daily, with a staggered start times across the three days to accommodate participants in different time zones. Each day will begin with a plenary keynote or success story relevant to the thematic focus of the day. The theme of Day 1 is the Current State of Data Use; Day 2’s theme is Constraints and Gaps; and Day 3’s theme is Capacities and Interventions. The conference will open with statements from Jyotsna Puri, Associate Vice-President, Strategy & Knowledge Dept, IFAD, and José Rosero Moncayo, Director FAO Statistics Division, Chair 50x2030 Partnership Council.

Access is free and open to anyone upon registration although the programming has been designed specifically for decision makers, data intermediaries and data producers and for national, global and regional stakeholders representing the policy, research and private sectors. Please see the provisional program below (an updated agenda can always be found on the conference website here) and mark your calendars!
